Yachting (racing / crewing) - outside territorial waters

Going to the South Pacific? Yachting is a great way to hop from island to island, especially is you love the sea. However, yachting is not for everyone. In order to stay safe, you need to be self-sufficient and highly-skilled in boat handling. Among the things you need to have knowledge of are meteorology, navigation, electrical and mechanical workings of the boat, first aid, radio, and sea survival, among many others. It is a good idea to attend certification courses administered by the Royal Yachting Association (UK). If yachting outside territorial waters is part of your vacation itinerary, then you should also definitely secure sports travel insurance.

You are at the mercy of the weather when you go yachting outside territorial waters. Studies also point out that most injuries occur during gybing, when the yacht's boom (the spar that extends the sail's foot). Other yacht parts such as the side stay, sheet, and spinnaker pole may also cause injuries, which can be very expensive to treat. Your existing medical insurance may not be enough to cover you when you are outside territorial waters, so it is best to secure travel insurance.

Yachting outside territorial waters is considered a Grade 3 risk sport, which means you and your passengers or companions have a high chance of getting injured. A sports travel insurance cover will save you from financial problems should you need hospitalisation, airlifting from a remote area, surgery, and other such expensive procedures.
