Water polo is a great sport to try when on vacation. Often considered a difficult sport, it combines the skills of swimming, basketball, rugby, football, and even wrestling - with the added challenge of being in water. It's an excellent way to get in shape as it provides an intense body workout, and it allows you to meet new people if you're vacationing in a foreign city. There are some risks involved in this sport, however, so it's important to get travel insurance if you want to try it out.
Common water polo injuries include hip and knee strain from heavy treading, and shoulder spasms from overstretching and overuse. Impact with the ball or other players can cause cuts, scratches, and facial injuries like black eye or split lips. Highly chlorinated water can cause eye irritation, and public pool waters are a common cause of warts. You can also get sunburns from playing in hot weather, or hypothermia if the weather or water is too cold. While most of these injuries are minor, they can be expensive to treat if you do not have insurance cover.
If you're interested in playing water polo during your trip, try looking up water polo pools or clubs in the area that are open to tourists. Consider taking a beginner's class if you are new to the sport to avoid injury.
Water polo has a Grade 1 risk level, meaning it is low-risk compared to other sports. Still, we recommend getting travel insurance so you can better enjoy your vacation.
