Trekking

Trekking is an excellent way to explore a new place and learn new skills, especially if you're vacationing in a foreign country. Not only is it a great form of exercise, it also allows you to enjoy the scenery and meet new people in your chosen destination. It is also a fun alternative to bus tours and common tourist activities. Trekking is a highly challenging sport and requires some skill, so make sure you have travel insurance if you want to try it during your vacation.

Trekking involves camping and hiking, and thus carries the risks of both. Cuts and scratches are very common, usually from falling or scraping against rocks and rough ground. Hiking in mountainous areas can cause mountain sickness, a condition characterised by weakness, nausea, headache, diarrhea, and extreme fatigue. Water-borne diseases are rampant especially in remote areas, so bring your own water supply and purifier (such as iodine crystals). Although most trekking injuries are minor, they can interfere with the rest of your vacation and cost you a lot if you do not have insurance cover.

Most areas have good trekking sites and groups that are open to tourists. Before joining a group, make sure you have all the provisions such as food, water, clothes, and a first aid kit. Your tour guide should brief you on safety and emergency plans at the start of the trip.

Trekking at under 2,000 metres is a Grade 1 risk sport, making it relatively safe. But it's still best to secure travel insurance so you can fully enjoy your trek.
