Buildings Insurance

This section of cover looks after the physical structure of your property- the bricks and mortar. If you have a mortgage, it is virtually compulsory that you have this insurance on your home, as your lender will want to know that their investment is protected if the house were to be damaged.

Standard cover will insure your property against things like Fire, Lightning Damage, Explosion, Storm, Flood and Subsidence, where your property is damaged by the land around it falling away. If you choose to go for the optional accidental damage cover option at additional cost, you will also be covered against those little instances like a bit of DIY going wrong, or putting your foot through the loft ceiling.

Our standard policy excess is 50, although in line with the rest of the insurance market in the UK, this excess increases for claims for Subsidence to 1,000.

Contents Insurance

This provides you with protection for the items you own and which stay in your home with you. Because you own them, its up to you whether you insure them so, unlike buildings insurance, you dont have to insure them if you dont want to.

If you do decide to get some contents insurance, just remember that it only covers your property inside your home. As soon as you leave your front door, you are no longer covered, which is why many people choose to buy personal possessions or all risks cover as well.

Just as with buildings insurance, you can choose to pay a little more for accidental damage cover, and there will always be a policy excess for you to pay if you make a claim.

Personal possessions or all risks cover

If you want any cover for your property once you leave your front door, youll need to buy some personal possessions cover. This is sometimes called all risks cover, because that is what it is intended to protect your property against all risks of loss or damage.

Think about things like the clothes you are wearing, purses, wallets, cameras, camcorders, handbags... as soon as you leave the house, unless you have a suitable amount of personal possessions cover, none of them will be covered.
