Travel to Mahon
Mahon, capital of Minorca (Menorca), is an attractive holiday destination with a rich and varied history. It’s a resort town for the more discerning traveller who wants to be near the beach, yet away from hordes of tourists.
Getting there
Minorca International Airport mainly receives charter flights from across Europe, but there are also scheduled services from Barcelona and Madrid as well as Majorca. The airport is five kilometres southwest of town and taxis are readily available for transfer to Mahon or your hotel. Ferries go daily from Barcelona (nine hours) and also arrive from Palma in Majorca.
Information on Mahons key attractions
The town’s most outstanding feature is its beautiful natural harbour, offering pleasant strolling with an abundance of eateries. There is a scattering of Georgian-style architecture among the traditional Spanish buildings and high-rises. Of particular interest is Lord Nelson’s mansion (Golden Farm) which has a fine vantage point overlooking the harbour.
A walking tour could begin in the town square, which features the 17th century Town Hall and pretty 18th century Church of Santa Maria - with its huge Swiss-made organ. The Arch de San Roque is one of the most historical buildings and remains part of the old city wall, and on the way to the harbour is the intriguing Xoriguer Gin Distillery.
Out and about
If it’s beaches you’re after, head for the southern coast; Cala Macarella and Cala Macarelleta are two fine and quiet beaches; while Cala en Porter is a popular resort. The former island capital of Ciudadella, in the west, has a fine old quarter boasting stylish Moorish and British buildings; while the Plaza España is a bustling tourist spot.
Leisure options
The harbour area is well endowed with stylish cafés and gourmet restaurants, boasting excellent views of the harbour. There are also many traditional pubs and bars in which to sample the local gin. Water sports enthusiasts will want to head for Cala en Porter on the southern coast.
Safety
Visitors should remain vigilant when driving on Minorca’s roads, especially in the north of the island where hairpin bends and steep gradients are all too common. Holidaymakers are far more susceptible to accidents when in an unfamiliar environment. When visiting Minorca, we strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you and your family.
