Travel to Madrid

Madrid seems to have been designed especially to delight tourists, with its fascinating museums, restful parks, cosy cafes and ebullient nightlife. Though the city covers a vast area, its main attractions in the centre are all easily accessible on foot.

Getting there

As Spain’s capital, Madrid is easy to get to from just about anywhere. Most people arrive at Barajas International Airport, which is located to the northeast of the city. From there you can take a taxi or hop on the metro to the city centre. If you are arriving by car, take Route N-1 heading south from the north coast. There are also rail and bus connections from all major Euopean cities.

Info on Madrids Key attractions

Selecting the best places to visit in Madrid is not easy, as there are so many alternatives. However, a few of the unmissable sights are the Palacio Real, the Prado and Reina Sofia museums, and the Retiro.

Out and about

If you ever get through with the attractions in the city centre, there are plenty of nearby places to visit. El Escorial, just 50kms from the city, is a popular day trip, as visitors flock to see the wonderful art and architecture, as well as the final resting place of the country’s former rulers.

Leisure options

After the sun sets, Madrid really comes to life, and there are plenty of bars, clubs and discos that are open till dawn. A few of the most famous are El Barbu, Valven and Kapital.

Safety

Violent crimes are uncommon in Madrid, but the crowded tourist centres attract plenty of pickpockets and bag snatchers, so you need to be on your guard. To feel extra safe, make sure that you take out travel insurance before you leave home.

Weather in Madrid

Madrid is the highest capital in Europe, making the climate somewhat extreme.   The summers can be very hot and the winters can be bitterly cold.   The average winter temperature for January is 5C.   It is a very sunny city with uo to 2800 hours of annual sunshine.   The average July temperature is 24C and the warm summer nights allow plenty of opportunities for al fresco dining.
