Be Safe In MadridMadrid doesn’t pose any major health risks, though the rich cuisine may give some travellers mild diarrhea. The water is generally safe to drink, but mineral water is advised. At least one ‘farmacia’ (pharmacy) is open at all times in every Spanish town, with many common and prescription drugs readily available. Pharmacies can answer simple medical questions and help you find a doctor. SafetyViolent crimes are uncommon, but Madrid’s Metro stations, platforms and metro cars are target-rich environments for petty thieves. Visitors are advised not to carry money, passports or other valuables in an outside pocket of a backpack or purse. Exercise awareness of your surroundings and be aware of people attempting to draw your attention away from your bags or distract you with diversions. Traffic in Madrid is fast paced and can be unnerving due to unfamiliar signs and motorbikes weaving in and out of traffic. Traffic is generally heavier in July and August as well as during the Christmas and Easter seasons. If driving, always obey the closest traffic light, as Madrid has separate pedestrian lights. Be alert when driving at night, as other drivers and pedestrians may be under the influence of alcohol. HelpIf your car breaks down, be cautious about accepting help from anyone other than a uniformed Spanish police officer or Civil Guard. If accepting unofficial assistance, keep valuables in sight and at hand. Don’t leave valuables in parked cars. Keep the doors locked, windows rolled up and valuables out of sight when driving. High value items such as cameras, laptop computers and briefcases are often stolen from cars. Police are generally helpful in Spain. In the event of an emergency of if you require any assistance, you should feel comfortable approaching them, although few officers speak English. In an emergency, dial 112. English is usually spoken on this number.
