Things To Do In IbizaIbiza is an island with a little bit of everything. Its colourful ancient history can be seen in the architecture and the customs of the people who live here. Culture buffs will enjoy the old fortified walls, towers and buildings of Ibiza’s glorious past and revel in the unique museums and graveyards of its previous rulers. Fun and sun seekers will have no lack of choice when it comes to beautiful beaches and exhilarating nightlife. For those who fall somewhere in between, Ibiza has some wonderful charismatic havens scattered around the island, where old traditions still exist, blended with a contemporary artistic flair. Santa GertrudisGenuine Ibiza village life still exists if you know where to look for it. This tiny hamlet in the middle of the island, just to the west of Santa Eulalia, boasts some quaint little handicraft shops and galleries in its central square. There are also a handful of fantastic bars in which to escape from the hectic atmosphere of Ibiza Town. Ibiza Old TownThe Old Town, also known as Dalt Vila, was founded over 2,500 years ago and still has an ancient feel. With a lively harbor, narrow cobblestone streets and whitewashed houses, the atmosphere is wonderful. Despite gross development elsewhere, much of the Old Town’s medieval character has been preserved. It’s an ideal place to wander around and soak up the ambiance of its markets, bars, galleries and shops. Museum of ArchaeologyHoused in a former arsenal in Ibiza’s Old Town, this museum has one of the world’s most important collections of Punic artefacts. It covers the prehistoric sites in Ibiza and Formentera, the Punic era and the sanctuaries of Illa Plana and Cuieram from the 7th to 2nd centuries BC. There’s a huge collection of Carthaginian artefacts from the island’s extensive burial grounds as well as Arab, Moorish and Christian artefacts from later periods. Museum of Contemporary ArtThis art gallery, located in Ibiza Town’s historic Dalt Vila (Old Town), displays several exhibitions throughout the year. It specialises in the artwork of renowned international artists as well as local talents. Galeria Van der VoortOne of the best art galleries on the island, this gallery contains a varied and impressive collection of art and photographs from a number of international and local artists. Necropolis (Punica del Puig des Molins)This vast, ancient cemetery is one of the best examples of Carthaginian culture in the whole of the Mediterranean. It dates back hundreds of years and is still very well preserved. It provides a fascinating glimpse into the culture that established Ibiza over 1,000 years ago. Paseo Vara de ReyThis avenue is one of the major landmarks in Ibiza Town, featuring many impressive shops and designer clothing outlets. It has a number of excellent bars and restaurants, which make it a very popular place to go after dark. It is always an exciting and busy area to hang out in.
