Getting To Ibiza

Being an island, there are only two ways to get to Ibiza. Most people prefer to fly into Es Codolar International Airport, as it’s the quickest and most convenient option. Several flights arrive each day from a few major Spanish cities as well as from Palma de Mallorca and UK destinations. The other choice is to take a ferry. Ferry services are good and at least one boat per day arrives at Ibiza. The main advantage of taking the ferry is that you can bring your car.

By car

Even though Ibiza is an island, it is completely possible to arrive by car. Ferries run from Barcelona and Majorca four times a week as well as from Valencia every day. You can drive your car right on to the boat and in a short while you’ll be driving off in the port of Ibiza. You can also rent a car on the island at the airport, but it’s advisable to book your car hire online ahead of time to avoid disappointment and to save money on the rental rate.

By ferry

Transmediterranea runs a ferry service from Barcelona to Ibiza four times a week. In addition, there is a boat from Valencia every day as well as four boats a week from Palma on the neighboring island of Mallorca. Ferries arrive at the port area, located just a few minutes drive from Ibiza Town. You should check with a local travel agent in one of the departure cities to find out the current schedule. You can also book your ticket through any travel agent. Be sure to buy a return ticket if you are travelling in the summer season, as seats sell out weeks in advance.

By air

Ibiza’s single airport is located seven kilometres from Ibiza Town and handles several arriving flights each day, depending on the time of year. After landing at the airport, you will find bus service available to take you into town. Taxis are also available outside the terminal. The trip from the airport into Ibiza Town takes about 20 minutes. If you are travelling during the summer peak season, make sure you have a return flight ticket, as seats are few and far between during this time.

by bus

There is no bus service that runs from the Spanish mainland to Ibiza. However, once on the island, local buses connect with the larger towns on the island.

Ibiza airport

Ibiza’s international airport is located just seven kilometres from the capital city, which makes flying in and out of the island easy and convenient. This little airport is busy, particularly on the weekends, when people flock to Ibiza from all over Europe to party at the island’s legendary nightclubs. The airport’s single terminal copes well with the large volume of traffic. Although small, the terminal has ATMs, a bank and a bureau de change. In addition, there is a post office, several places to eat and duty-free shopping. Iberia Airlines is the main carrier, operating seven daily flights from Palma de Mallorca and three from Barcelona.

There are also a couple of flights from Valencia and Madrid each day. Air Europa is the other main carrier, offering two flights a day from Barcelona as well as less frequent flights from Madrid and Palma. Prices vary widely depending on the season. Charter flights make up the rest of the airport’s traffic, with flights winging in from all corners of Europe. There is an airport information desk in the Arrivals area (tel: +34 971 809 000) as well as a tourist information office (tel: +34 971 809 118).

Transportation from Ibiza airport

Getting from the airport to Ibiza Town is quick and simple. Regular bus service from the airport is the most economical way to get to the towns around the island. These buses run from 07:00 until 22:35 and the travel time to Ibiza Town is around 30 minutes. Taxis are also an easy way to reach your hotel. They are all waiting outside the terminal building to whisk you into Ibiza Town in about 20 minutes. Taxis will also take you to Playa d’en Bossa, San Antonio, Santa Eulalia, San Jose and San Juan.

Car hire is also a good option. Avis, Betacar Ibiza, Centauro, Hertz and Tui Cars all have offices in the Arrivals area of the terminal. It is easy to find your way to Ibiza Town and other areas of the island, as the roads are well-signed. The main access road is the PM-801 motorway, which leads directly to the airport. You can also use the PM-803 motorway and take the exit at kilometre-4. Another way to get to Ibiza Town is to take the Carretera del Aeropuerto past San Jose and into the city. There are more than enough signs to make the 20-minute trip a simple one.
