Granada Travel GuideTravel to GranadaThe enchanting town of Granada boasts a wonderful setting overlooking the magnificent Sierra Nevada Mountains and contains a number of fascinating sights itself. The town centre is one of wide, leafy boulevards, a tangle of ancient alleys, and beautiful parks and gardens. Getting thereGranada Airport receives domestic flights only, but has good connections with Madrid and Barcelona airports. Málaga Airport has better deals and far more options. Shuttles and taxis are available for transfer to the city and hotels, and there is a regular bus service from Málaga Airport. By car, Granada is due south of Madrid on the E-5 and E-902 highways; while Barcelona is northwest along the E-15 and A-92N. There are several trains a day from Madrid (including a night train) and one train a day from Barcelona. Buses go from Madrid’s Estacion sur de Autobuses to Granada, and there are 14 buses a day from Málaga.
Information on Granadas key attractionsGranada’s principal attraction is the Alhambra pleasure palace. This huge castle, consisting of fine, ornately decorated palaces was home for centuries to the sultans who once ruled. Views from here of the mountains are breathtaking. Other highlights include: the cathedral, the Capilla Real, and the two fascinating quarters known as the Albaicín (Moorish) and Sacromonte (gypsy caves where flamenco is performed). Out and aboutThe nearby Sierra Nevada mountain range is a short drive away, and offers superb skiing; while the Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada is a botanical paradise. Historical Málaga is the capital of the Costa del Sol and boasts several fine bathing beaches, excelleny art and history museums and an exciting nightlife. Almunecar has a fabulous hillside setting with a spectacular coastline and some of the best scuba diving in Spain; while nearby Nerja features prehistoric caves. Leisure OptionsThere are many atmospheric cafés and tavernas scattered among Granadas plazas, patios and narrow winding streets. Pedro Alarcon and the area around Plaza Nueva are the busiest parts of the city for nightly entertainment. SafetyBe careful when driving on the mountain roads in the Sierra Nevadas and especially along the Costa del Sol. Holidaymakers are more susceptible to dangers and annoyances, such as pickpockets, and should try to remain alert and vigilant. When visiting Granada, we strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for yourself and your family. Weather in GranadaFrom June to September the visitor to Granada can expect daily sunshine. The temperature goes up to 30C during the day with nightly lows of 8C. July and August will be hot and humid with virtually no rain. It means that you can go in shirt sleeves during the day and a sweater in the evenings.
