Granada TransportThe only real option for getting about Granada is by bus or taxi. Driving is not recommended, as the streets are highly congested and most tourist areas are either very tight or pedestrianised. Several bus routes cover the main areas of the city and run at all hours of the day, while taxis are affordable, congregate at the main tourist hotspots and can also be hailed from any street. Walking seems to be the most popular option for getting about, so long as your hotel is in a touristy area. Visitors planning on seeing the main sights, including the Albaicín and the Alhambra areas, should stick to walking, as much of these areas are pedestrianised and trying to park cars here can be very difficult. If you want to visit areas of greater Granada, making use of buses and taxis is the way to go. By busGranada is a huge city that can’t be covered in its entirety comfortably on foot. Buses are the cheapest form of shared public transport in Granada and the city’s tourist offices have leaflets detailing city bus routes. One of the most popular bus routes is bus number 3, which runs from the main bus station to Gran Vía de Colón in the city centre. In addition, bus numbers 4, 6, 7, 9 and 11 run from the train station to the city centre, while visitors can also buy a 21-journey ticket, which is ideal if staying outside the city. TaxisTaxis offer the fastest transport option within Granada and can be hailed from city streets. There are also several taxi ranks at popular locations throughout the city, where there are always taxi cabs waiting. These areas include Plaza Nueva, near the Alhambra and outside big city hotels. A green ‘libre’ light on the taxi roof indicates whether the taxi is free. Radio Taxi is one of the more popular taxi firms if you need to call for a cab. Tourist servicesOne good investment to make if you are in Granada for a few days is to purchase a weekly Bono card, which allows access to many top attractions including the Alhambra and the Generalife gardens, the Cathedral and Capilla Real among many others highlights. The Bono card also allows nine city bus journeys and access to the tourist bus for a day. From the airportSix buses per day run from Granada Airport to the main bus station, with selected stops on the way. The first bus departs at 08:00 and the last bus at 19:00; they are timed to coincide with flights from the capital and Barcelona. Taxis are also available and run from directly outside the terminal building, while drivers should take the A92 east and then the E19 south for Granada city centre.
