Granada Entertainment

Granada can be classed as a party town, owing to its huge student population, its flamenco clubs and the extremely popular moraga summer beach party. People come from all over Europe just to experience the latter, with its barbeques, bonfires and sangria. Although visitors should note that the city is a year-round entertainment destination with regards to its entertainment value. Granada also boasts a huge array of tapas bars and there are music clubs here covering all genres.

Nightlife

Granada offers a mixture of rowdy areas and quiet evening retreats, which cater for all types of people looking for nightlife. Pedro Antonio de Alarcón is one of the main hangouts, although it is particularly aimed at the student market. Lovers of everything grunge should try out the venues along Elvira, while club Planta Baja is well into the chill out scene. The Plaza Nueva area caters to those who enjoy a more mature time. The best thing about most of these places is that many establishments are also terraced and spill out onto the streets.

Theatre and Music

Granada is the cultural heart of the Andalusia region of Spain and there are many fine plays and concert performances at the renowned Teatro Isabel la Católica in the city centre. Granada also offers live music and there are numerous bars where live bands play nightly including rock, blues and jazz bands. The city is also loaded with flamenco joints, best seen along Camino del Sacromonte or at clubs like the Peña de la Platería and La Chumbera. Festivals

Several unique Andalusian festivals and events take place in Granada every year, mainly in the summer months. Music plays a large part in the summer festivals, with highlights including:

• Corpus Christi, this colourful religious festival involves lots of flowers and processions through the streets of Granada and includes the curious 'dancing egg' and the Cathedral's fountain (May).
• Sonar is a must-see event for those who are into electronic music. Sonar is the biggest festival of its kind in Europe with scintillating displays of electronic music at popular venues throughout the city (June).
• International Festival of Music and Dance is the biggest event of the year, held at Alhambra, the Generalife Gardens and all over the city, with dozens of shows featuring international ballets and orchestras from countries around the world (June to July).
• The Festival Internacional de Jazz de Granada comes later in the year and features many renowned international jazz musicians playing out at venues across the city (October to December).
