Fuerteventura Travel Guide

The paradise Canary Island of Fuerteventura is a lot less busy than some of its neighbours. It boasts the longest stretch of beach in the island chain, superb hiking in its striking volcanic landscape, and some of the best windsurfing in the world.

Getting there

The airport is south of the capital, Puerto del Rosario, and receives mainly charter flights from Europe, mainland Spain and the other Canary Islands. From farther afield, flights go via Madrid or Barcelona. There is a local bus service that connects the airport and many island destinations. Those on package holidays usually get free transfers. Taxis are available but very expensive. Ferry services connect the capital with Cadiz as well as other Canary Islands.

Information on Fuerteventuras key attractions

The beaches here are among Europe’s best, including those around the capital, the wide, flat beaches of Jandia (south), and the beautiful golden sand dunes of Corralejo (north). Several excellent walking trails originate in Corralejo, offering spectacular vistas. The walk to El Cotillo is awe-inspiring, and for the less active, the walk along Corralejo’s promenade, meandering through the great sand dunes, (Las Dunas) is superb.

Out and about

The former island capital, Betancuria, is easily accessible by car and has many attractions. It also offers excellent sightseeing on foot, once you get to the town. The brilliant Betancuria Museum has impressive archaeological and paeleontological exhibits, and the nearby early 15th century Santa Maria Church is also impressive. The huge Botanical Gardens display some of Fuerteventura’s beautiful flora. Out of town, the Mirador de Morro Velosa has outstanding views of the island’s landscape. For another interesting drive, the road between Corralejo and Lajares, accessible by jeep, is the next best alternative to hiking, and shows off Fuerteventura’s gorgeous natural beauty.

Leisure options

For those interested in the islands water sports, Sotavento, in the south, hosts the world speed and slalom windsurfing event, and there is jet-skiing, windsurfing and sailing at Jandia and Corralejo. Betancuria has many trendy cafés and restaurants; while Jandia, Corralejo and the capital all have a host of bars and pubs.

Be careful when driving or hiking across the volcanic landscape in the area. Visitors are more susceptible to accidents when in an unfamiliar environment. Water sports are also a potential hazard and visitors should remain alert and vigilant. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you and your family when visiting Fuerteventura.

It is always Spring in the Canary Isalands. The temperatures vary by only some 6C through the seasons. The monthly average is from 18 to 24C and the sea is beautifully warm all through the year. Due to the geographical location the islands climate is subtropical. The water temperature varies between 22C in summer and 19C in winter. Many people like to spend the winter here due to the pleasant climate.
