Getting To FormenteraFormentera is a very small island and there is no airport on it. There are no train lines or highways connecting the island with neighbouring Ibiza, so the only way to reach the island is to take a ferry from Ibiza. To get to Ibiza, you can either take a ferry from Barcelona or Denia, or you can fly from many European destinations. The distance between Ibiza and Formentera is 11 nautical miles, making the journey between the islands very quick. By carIt is not possible to drive to Formentera, although you can drive through mainland Spain and catch a car ferry across to neighbouring Ibiza and then onwards to Formentera. You can take your car across; however, bicycles are the preferred method of transport on Formentera. Ferries to Ibiza can be caught from Barcelona or Denia. Barcelona can be reached by taking the A7 if you are travelling from France; the A2 from Madrid, via Zaragoza; and the A16 if you are travelling from the south, via Valencia and Tarragona. Denia can be reached by either the N-332 or the A-7 highway.
By railThere are is no rail service on either Ibiza or Formentera. The rail services throughout mainland Spain are very good and they are managed by RENFE ,who provide modern, comfortable and reliable trains to all major cities as well as yo many airports and ferry ports. By busIt is not possible to catch a bus to Formentera. Buses travel throughout mainland Spain and can take you to the port of Barcelona. The bus companies in Spain include ALSA, who have the best reputation and run an extensive network, and Busabout, who serve Barcelona, from where you can catch a ferry to Ibiza. The services are excellent and traveling by train is the first choice of transport among many travellers in Spain.
By ferryThe only way to travel to Formentera is by taking a ferry from Ibiza. There are dozens of ferries that make the journey every day. Jet ferries take 25 minutes to make the journey, whereas the conventional and car ferries can take up to an hour. Crossings are generally very pleasant, although they can be rough at times. Formentera airportIf you are visiting Formentera and arriving by air, you will have to fly into Ibiza International Airport and catch a ferry across to Formentera. The airport in Ibiza is situated just under five miles outside the capital, from where all major tourist resorts are easily reached. The airport consists of a single terminal, which although small offers excellent amenities. Passengers will find information desks, ATMs, bureaux de change, a post office, bars, restaurants and duty-free shopping. Disabled travellers will find that there are specially designed lifts, adapted toilets and telephones as well as lowered pavements and five dedicated parking spaces for those with valid disabled persons’ badges. Taxis for disabled passengers are available from Radio Taxi de San José (tel: +34 971 398 340). The airport serves many destinations on the Spanish mainland as well as major European cities. Transport from Formentera airportPeople arriving at Ibiza Airport who want to make their way to Formentera can catch a taxi from outside the Arrivals Hall or take a bus into Ibiza Town centre. If you prefer to find your own way to the port or you wish to take a car across on the journey, you can hire a car at the airport.
