There is plenty to choose from in the way of comfortable accommodation, and finding somewhere to stay in Sao Paulo is rarely a problem. There are several areas where hotels are concentrated, ranging from luxury first-class hotels to more affordable options.
The top hotels are very reasonably priced compared with Europe, but many of the budget places are in seedy parts of the city, where crime may be a problem. Sao Paulo is the financial hub of Brazil and attracts business travellers during the weekdays. It has many excellent hotels which are aimed at corporate executives, so tourists often get over-looked. The weekends can be a good time to stay, as prices drop significantly and many hotels offer special packages including museum and shopping deals.
Apart-hotels are very popular in Sao Paulo. These are hotels that offer one or two-bedroom apartments with fully furnished kitchens. They are usually significantly cheaper than a luxury hotel, while having larger rooms and a good range of facilities.
Where to stay
The Centro area around the financial district has a large number of hotels to choose from. Many attractions are situated close by and the public transport here is good. The disadvantage is that it is very quiet at night, with limited dining and entertainment (apart from the red light district).
The nearby neighbourhood of Jardins has less traffic and some of the best restaurants and nightlife in the city. It is one of the safest districts at night, but it doesn't have a metro stop.
Avenida Paulista caters mainly for business travellers and the hotels here are mostly top class and expensive. If you book a room for the weekend, you can often find great bargains, as the rates can drop by almost half. A short way from Centro you can find the quiet and attractive neighbourhood of Higienópolis. It has some good restaurants and shops, and prices are much lower here than in other parts of the city.
