Wellington Weather
Wellington’s climate is fairly mild and temperate, with the best conditions and most tropical climate from October to April, when Wellington and New Zealand experience their highest temperatures. Wellington's weather is distinctly cooler during winter, in the months of June, July and August, even though winters here are rather short and never harsh, with only occasional frosts.
Rain
Annual rainfall ranges from 800mms in eastern Wairarapa to 7,000mms in the higher regions of the Tararua Range. The area tends to get low rainfall in the summer and high rainfall in the winter. Heavy rainfall at any time of the year can cause flooding near streams and rivers.
Wind
Wellington is well-known for its wind. The wind-funnelling effect of the Cook Strait brings about a high incidence of strong winds around the southern coast, while the uneven topography leads to local variations in wind direction and strength. Wind records from Cape Palliser and Castlepoint show that the Wairarapa coast is among one of the windiest places in New Zealand.
