Queenstown Weather

Located at altitude in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island, Queenstown sports an alpine climate with warm and pleasant summers and bitterly cold winters. The city and its surroundings experience four seasons, although rainfall is fairly low throughout the year. The best time of year to visit depends on what you want to do. Most adventure sports take off in the summer, while the spring and autumn months are much less crowded. The winter signifies the ski season, which attracts all sorts of snow sport lovers.

Summer

Summer is from December to February, with temperatures of between 25°C and 30°C, and fine sunny days. January is generally the wettest month of the year, although most days are dry or showery at the most, with the nearby mountains taking most of the precipitation. Spring and autumn offer similar temperatures (10°C to 20°C) and rainfall.

Winter

Wintertime in Queenstown lasts from between May and August, when most days are cold, and although the precipitation is at its lowest during July and August, there is plenty of snowfall in the mountains. This is also a very lively time of year for Queenstown as all of the ski resorts open and you can partake in a number of winter sports.
