Auckland Weather

New Zealand is in the southern hemisphere, which means that the seasons are reversed. Auckland experiences most types of weather, and sometimes all in the same day. The climate is temperate, bordering on sub-tropical. Summers are generally warm and humid, and winters are mild and damp. High levels of rainfall occur almost year-round.

Summer

The best months for travel are from October to April, especially if you want to participate in adventure activities. Try to avoid the summer school holidays, which fall between mid-December and the end of January. Temperatures usually stay in the mid-20°s in the summer, with an average of 7 to 8 hours of sunshine per day.

February is the warmest month, but temperatures rarely exceed 30°C. The early mornings are often very calm before the sea breezes kick in, making it the best time of day, with many locals preferring to walk and run in the parks in the first half of the day.

Winter

Auckland's weather is cooler during the winter months of June, July and August, although there isn't a distinct change in weather between the seasons. The maritime climate ensures that temperatures don't reach the extremes that they would if the city were landlocked.

Average winter temperatures are around 14°C, though they can vary greatly. Warm westerly winds can make winter days mild, but on other days, it can be cold and very rainy. The city escapes snowfalls, but the ground in some sheltered, low-lying areas may occasionally see frost.

The weather can change quickly, with tropical cyclones and cold fronts affecting the city. Rainfall is consistent all year, although it is more likely to be heavier in the winter. The weather can also vary in different parts of the city due to geography such as hills, land cover and distance from the sea.
