Auckland Leisure
Sport is an important part of life in New Zealand and many locals can be found taking part in activities at the weekends. Although the country has a small population, it has been very successful on an international scale, especially in rugby, cricket and netball.
Rugby and cricket
Rugby has a huge following throughout New Zealand and the local team, the Vodafone Warriors, play at the Ericsson Stadium in Penrose. The legendary All Blacks play at Eden Park or the Ericsson Stadium if they are in Auckland. Cricket is also very popular and the city has six grounds for local and national matches, the most famous being Eden Park, which has staged 225 first-class games since 1913.
Water sports
Auckland is a prime water sports destination, and one in three of the city's population goes boating on a regular basis. Visitors have the chance to crew on an America’s Cup yacht with Sail New Zealand, while there are also numerous companies offering cruises, tours and charters. One of the best trips is on the tall ship Soren Larsen, a square-rigged, 19th century brigantine ship with 12 sails. Good surf can be found less than 30 miles from the city at Bethells Beach. Most of the surfing beaches have surf clubs, lifeguards and boards for rent.
