Auckland is a large city and it has accommodation to suit everybody, from backpackers to business travellers. If you are after the best service, stunning views, and great food, then the city's luxury hotels won't disappoint. At the other end of the scale, there are well-equipped hostels and university lodgings. For longer stays, you might want to consider staying at a fully-serviced apartment.

Despite the broad range, most places fill up in December, January and February, so booking ahead is essential. At other times, it's less important to pre-book, and during the winter months from June to September, you'll be spoiled for choice and should find the rates considerably cheaper.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Auckland is quite spread out over several different neighbourhoods. If you don't want to be worrying about public transport, then stay in the city centre or the business district. From here, it's just a short walk, bus or taxi ride to explore the many attractions. There are numerous four and five-star hotels, mostly geared towards business travellers and tour groups. The walk-in rates are usually very high, so make arrangements in advance if possible. There is also a limited range of budget accommodation in the city centre.

Parnell is an upmarket inner-city suburb just over a mile east of the centre. It has a choice of places to stay and there are many trendy shops and restaurants here. It is also within walking distance of Newmarket, which has further accommodation options. Mount Eden is another suburb situated to the south, which is dominated by the volcano, Maungawhau. Nearby, One Tree Hill is very sedate and has a good range of inexpensive places to stay.

The seaside area of Devonport has pleasant surroundings and can be reached by taking a 10-minute ferry ride. There are numerous B&Bs, many of which are in beautifully renovated Victorian or Edwardian villas. You can also enjoy the stunning views of Auckland's city skyline.

If you don't mind staying a little farther away, travel west to the rainforests of the Waitakere Ranges, where you will find plenty of cosy home stays and B&Bs, some with beautiful views of the west coast beaches.
