Tucson was once a Spanish outpost in the American Desert Southwest. The city is surrounded by Arizonas jaw-dropping red desert. Nowadays it is a lively, innovative and progressive city which celebrates its diversity and aims to preserve its interesting traditions.

Transportation to Tucson

Tucson International Airport is situated about 11 miles south of the city centre. The majority of the international flights are to Mexico. The facility is mainly served by America West, Continental, Northwest, Aeroliteral, Alaska, American, and United Airlines. Tucsons railway station can be found in the El Presidio Historic District. The city is positioned on Amtraks Sunset Limited line which follows routes between Orlando Florida and Los Angeles.

Interstate 10, the principal east-west interstate throughout the southern United States, passes through Tucson on the way leading north to Phoenix. I-19 links Tucson with Nogales at Mexicos border. I-86 runs southwest into the Papago Indian Reservation. I-79 goes north approaching Florence and eventually links with the US 60 into Phoenix. To get to the city centre, drive along the Congress Street, exit off I-10. The I-10 runs on west to Los Angeles and east through New Orleans and Houston prior to terminating in Jacksonville Florida. North of Tuscon, I-8 branches off I-10 and heads to San Diego in the west. Greyhound coaches follow routes to cities and towns across the state and cities in the region, with links to cities further afield.

What to see

The citys chief attraction is its astonishing El Presidio Historic District. Enclosed in the downtown area, this neighbourhood boasts the historical Spanish La Casa Cordova which can be entered via the Tucson Museum of Art. La Casa is a old house which once was owned by to a wealthy Spanish businessman before Arizona became American territory. The museum itself features a fine collection of ancient indigenous artwork, artifacts and contemporary art.

Fascinating attractions in downtown Tucson include the Stevens House and the Fish House. Once, local politicians lived in these historical 19th century houses. The two houses have been preserved and transformed into museums, both renowned for their original displays offering aninsightinto howthe local elite lived in the 19th century.

Day trips

Tucsons surroundings are filled with charming and interesting localities that can be easily accessed by car. Saguaro National Park is situated on both the east and the west sides of Tucson. The park provides an opportunity to view a wonderful, pristine example of Arizonas desert environment. A large collection of stuffed animals from around the globe can be seen in the International Wildlife Museum.

Due to its all year round sunny weather, Tucson is a paradise for those who love outdoor activities. The city is surrounded by several impressive national parks, a spacious empty desert and five mountain ranges, providing ample recreation opportunities.

Safety issues

Like any highly populated metropolis, Tucson has its crime problems. However, in general Tucson is a pleasant, friendly and safe place to be. The majority of the crime in Tucson involves car theft.
