Travel to St Louis
Located in the heart of the USA, St Louis combines the frontier west, gracious south, sophisticated east and the industrial north. The city's riverboat culture was immortalised by Mark Twain in his novel: Life on the Mississippi and in his tales of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.
Transportation to St Louis
Lambert-St Louis Airport receives domestic traffic only, but it provides good connections to nearby international airports. A train service, operating at regular intervals, runs between the airport and downtown St Louis. The city is served by the convenient Amtrak railway network, connecting it to Chicago and Kansas City. Greyhound buses also serve the city, linking it to the extensive Greyhound network.
What to see
St Louis, located on the eastern border of Missouri across the Mississippi River from Illinois, is the state's cultural centre. Its most prominent landmark is the 580-foot high Gateway Arch, symbolising the country's westward expansion. For leisure, the Great Forest Park has a wide range of attractions including an open-air theatre, an art museum, a zoo and a planetarium.
Daytrips
Americas first wine district was founded just west of St Louis. In the mid-19th century, immigrants from Germany's Rhine River valley planted vineyards, built cellars and created a wine culture that is still thriving today. Just 30 minutes drive west of downtown St Louis, on the banks of the Missouri River, is the colonial town of St Charles. This town was founded in 1769 and was originally Missouri's first capital. South Main Street attracts many shoppers with more than 100 shops, restaurants and cafes, welcoming visitors to the beautifully preserved historic district.
Activities and leisure
St Louis offers a plethora of outdoor and leisure options such as golf, freshwater diving and speed and horse racing. The city is also home to several professional sports teams including the famous the St Louis Cardinals baseball team. Mastodon State Historic Site is home to 400 acres of forest, offering plenty of hiking trails.
Safety issues
When driving long distances, you are at a greater risk of having an accident; always take regular breaks. Park your car away from city streets at night and remain vigilant for pickpockets in the downtown district. The cost of medical care in the US is high; therefore, we strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance for you and your family when visiting St Louis.
