Although Savannah has all the usual national chain hotels and family-run motels, the undisputed stars of this town are the small inns located in the Historic District. Many of the stately old homes have been lovingly restored and renovated with all the modern comforts without compromising their original charm. So if the term historic inn conjures up the picture of a rundown mansion with sagging porches and faded paint, you’re way off base. They are all of the highest quality and truly worth the extra cost if you are able to book a room. Because there are so many restored inns, and all of them have completely different layouts, the rates vary wildly. Even the most expensive inn may have some smaller, more moderately priced, rooms tucked off to the side. However, since many of the best properties in the Historic District are in quaint little homes, reservations are essential.
Where to stay
To really take full advantage of what Savannah has to offer, you need to stay somewhere downtown or in the Historic District. Not only will you be staying in one of the atmospheric old inns, but you’ll be within walking distance of almost everything, including all of the nightlife. Granted, any room in the Historic District is going to cost quite a bit more than a motel on the outskirts of town, but you’ll find the extra cost well worth it. River Street and Bay Street are the hub of the action in Savannah and have a wider range of accommodation.
Visitors on a tighter budget can stay in the Southside area or on the outskirts of town and simply drive into the Historic District. There are also dozens of hotels on Tybee Island, the nearest beach to Savannah, which is only a 15-minute drive from the downtown area.
When to visit
There’s no bad time to visit Savannah. Summer brings the most tourists, as people take their vacations during July and August. The constant succession of outdoor festivals also attracts a lot of visitors in the summer months. Winter is almost as popular thanks to the balmy weather compared to the rest of the country. Even though spring is the nicest time of year in Savannah, not many visitors can take their vacations at that time of year, so it’s the ideal season to come if you can. Fall is another great option to avoid the crowds. Most hotels and inns offer reduced rates during the shoulder seasons and during the weekdays.
