Getting to Savannah

There are several ways to get to Savannah. Most international travellers will probably fly into either Savannah International Airport or Atlanta International Airport. However, there is also regularly scheduled service on trains and buses to the city.

By car

The main north-south highway along the eastern seaboard, I-95, intersects the large east-west highway I-16 just 10 miles west of town, making it easy to drive into Savannah. A slower, but more scenic route is US17, known as the Coastal Highway, which runs north-south through town; and US 80, which stretches from coast to coast also goes right through Savannah.

By rail

Amtrak (tel: +1 912 234 2611) has regular train service all along the eastern seaboard, with daily stops in Savannah on the way to Florida. The train station is located 4 miles southwest of downtown, then you can take a short taxi ride to your destination.

By bus

Savannah is a major stop for Greyhound (tel: +1 912 233 8186) buses, which extensively cover the entire country. Besides flying, bus travel is the most popular way to get around in America, as prices are cheap and the buses go everywhere. The long-distance bus station is located downtown.

By air

There are two options for air travel into Savannah. Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is located 18 miles west of the city and services a range of domestic airlines. Despite the airports name, there are actually no international flights. Its more likely that travellers will fly into Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport, which does handle an extensive number of international flights from dozens of carriers. There are frequent shuttles which run from the airport to Savannah, or you can take a connecting flight.

By ferry

There is no ferry service into Savannah.

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport

Despite its title, this airport doesnt actually service any international flights. However, there are plenty of domestic connections from larger regional airports such as Atlanta or Charlotte. Delta, United, Northwest, US Airways and several smaller budget airlines all regularly fly in and out of Savannahs airport.

The small but efficient terminal in Savannah has all the usual facilities which a traveller might need. Four ATMs, a self-service post office, restaurants and shops can all be found in the main terminal area. Wireless Internet is also available at points throughout the airport. An information desk can be found on the first floor in the baggage claim area (tel: +1 912 964 0514).

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport transportation

Shuttle vans operated by McCalls Limousine Service (tel: +1 912 966 5364) provide door-to-door transportation but advance reservation is required. Taxis are an even easier way to get from the airport to your hotel, and arent much more expensive than using the private shuttle van service, especially if you are travelling with more than one person. If you rent a car, simply take I-95 south to I-16 east which will take you right into downtown Savannah.
