Savannah Transport

The grid-shaped Historic District, where visitors spend most of their time, is best seen on foot. The streets are laid out in a logical fashion for easy navigation, and the many squares provide places to stop and rest. The other parts of the city can be explored by using the public transportation system or cabs, but if you want to reach anything outside of town it is best to rent a car.

Tourist services

Savannah is one of the top walking tour towns in America, and has several different tour options. One of the most quaint is a carriage tour, which takes you by horse-drawn carriage through the Historic District at a leisurely pace while the coachman tells you stories of the past. Old Town Trolley Tours has special 90-minute narrated tours on their trolleys which stop at 13 different places, where passengers can get on and off as they please. The Historic Savannah Foundation leads a variety of informational tours of the Lowcountry and Historic District. You can always do a self-guided tour, but occasionally its nice to have someone give you information relating to the sights.

From the airport

Shuttle vans operated by McCalls Limousine Service (tel: +1 912 966 5364) provide door-to-door transportation but advance reservation is required. Taxis are an even easier way to get from the airport to your hotel, and are not much more expensive than using the private shuttle van service, especially if you are travelling with more than one person. If you rent a car, simply take I-95 south to I-16 east which will take you right into downtown Savannah.
