Be Safe in San Jose

Although a safe and healthy city, taking out travel insurance before visiting San Jose is a must. The driving can be tough in this busiest of business cities, while basic health and safety vigilance is required.

Safety

San Jose is officially Americas safest big city, although it is not immune to the scourge of petty thieves. Remain alert in crowded, touristy areas where pickpockets are likely to operate such as in Kelley Park and at the bus and train stations. The main safety consideration when visiting San Jose, however, is to take care when driving. The city is criss-crossed by a myriad of major highways and driving anywhere requires a fair bit of concentration.

Health

There are no special health risks to be aware of when visiting San Jose, although you should make sure your tetanus and polio jabs are up-to-date. The city enjoys lots of sunshine, and if you have small children and plan on spending a lot of time outdoors in the parks, make sure you bring along the sun block.

Travel insurance

Any sort of medical treatment in America is very expensive and travelling to San Jose without a comprehensive travel insurance policy is not recommended. Furthermore, many hospitals will not provide treatment unless you have insurance or can at least prove that you have enough funds to cover the treatment. Everyone will be treated in an emergency, however.
