The vibrant and diverse community that calls this City by the Bay home is one of the most progressive in America, and continually raises the bar for the rest of the country. Add to this free-flowing spirit the almost surreal natural setting of the bay, the hills and the Golden Gate Bridge which connects it all, and its easy to see why so many people want to live in San Francisco.

Transportation to San Francisco

San Francisco International Airport is the point of entry for most international travellers, and is one of the major trans-Pacific air hubs on the west coast. Located just 14 miles from downtown, the airport is connected to the city by taxi, shuttle bus and the impressive BART public transport network. San Francisco also has regular bus connections to nearly every American town, and several of Amtraks train lines stop here. Driving to San Francisco is also an easy proposition since it lies at the crossroads of several major Interstate highways.

All of this is painted on the stunning natural backdrop of the bay and amazing green spaces such as Golden Gate Park. Suffice to say, you wont be starved for choice when visiting this town.

Day trips

If you rent a car, there are some fantastic destinations just outside the urban edges the Bay Area. Northern California is home to the famous wineries of Napa and Sonoma Valley, some of the finest beaches on the coast and forests of towering redwoods. If its mountains you want, the mighty Sierra Nevadas are just a couple of hours to the east.

Activities and leisure

San Franciscos wonderfully cool climate is ideal for all kinds of outdoor activity, and the city embraces a healthy and active lifestyle. Golden Gate Park is the green heart and soul of this city, and is loved and used by everyone. There are beaches right at the urban doorstep, and the Golden Gate Recreational Area offers hiking trails and wide-open views by the seaside. The city also has a thriving professional sports scene, with representatives from all the major American sports.

Safety issues

San Francisco has a reputation as a safe and friendly city. There are a few scruffy neighbourhoods which should be avoided, but otherwise there isnt much to worry about. During the peak summer season, the number of tourists greatly increases, offering an opportunity for the citys petty thieves to ply their trade. It is strongly suggested that you buy some travel insurance before your trip to ensure that any mishaps dont ruin your holiday.
