This dynamic city offers an excellent variety of accommodation covering the whole spectrum, from luxury oceanfront resorts to downtown Victorian inns. San Diego is a large city, so there are several areas where you can stay. The city has also grown into a major business and convention destination, which is something to consider when making your plans. Regardless of where you stay or when you come, be prepared to pay a premium price to vacation in this wonderland.

Where to stay

San Diego is rather spread out, so location is an important factor when planning your visit. Consider which attractions you want to see and base yourself in their area. There are lots of hotels and resorts in Mission Valley and Mission Bay which are good for families and convenient for accessing SeaWorld, the zoo and the beaches. The downtown district has hip boutique hotels and lovely Victorian inns in the Gaslamp quarter, so if you want to indulge in the city’s chic scene, this is a good option. High-end hotels are scattered everywhere from the downtown area all the way north to La Jolla.

While the city is better known for its resorts and chain hotels, San Diego also boasts some excellent bed and breakfasts. The historic Julian district in the foothills east of the city has many wonderful old inns, but if you really want to indulge in the lap of luxury, spend a night or two at the Hotel del Coronado. This 1888 landmark is a turreted Victorian mansion set right on the sea in one of the most beautiful settings in America. It’s pricey, but well worth the splurge.

When to visit

Weather-wise, there’s really no bad time to visit San Diego. Your main concern should be avoiding the crowds. High season is vaguely defined as the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, but hotel rates hit their peak in July and August. The downtown hotels can be busy with conventions at any time, and even some of Mission Valley’s hotels can be affected by the flow of conventions, so check with the tourism office and find out if anything huge is happening when you want to visit. For good rates, consider staying downtown on the weekend and along the coast or in Mission Valley mid-week.
