San Diego Transport
Since most of San Diego was laid out after the advent of the automobile, a car is a necessity for most visitors. Public transportation covers most of the major attractions, and makes it easy to get from downtown to the beaches, but journeys can be slow going. The San Diego Trolley is a convenient way to get from downtown to Old Town, Qualcomm Stadium, the Mexican border and the Coronado Ferry. Taxis will get you everywhere else, but for a price.
By train
The fantastic San Diego Trolley light rail system connects with San Diego Transit buses. These bright-orange trolleys operate around downtown, Mission Valley, Old Town, South Bay and to the Mexican border. They run everyday from 05:00 until midnight, hitting each station every 15 minutes or so. Day Tripper Passes are available for 1, 2, 3 or 4 days, offering unlimited travel on buses and trolleys.
By bus
The entire city is served by a reliable, efficient network of bus routes which run to Oceanside to the north and the Mexican border to the south. San Diego Transit buses connect to the San Diego Trolley light rail system at San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park and several beaches such as Mission Beach.
By ferry
The small San Diego-Coronado ferry departs from the Broadway Pier daily, every hour on the hour. Sunday to Thursday, the ferry runs from 09:00 until 21:00, and on Fridays and Saturdays from 09:00 until 22:00.
Taxis
Taxi fares vary among the many companies that compete in this city. Taxi stands can be found at hotels and shopping centres, otherwise you need to call and order a pick-up as flagging one down is a difficult task.
From the airport
Transport options between the airport and the city include shuttle vans, buses and taxis. All of these services can be found in front of each of the terminals. The cheapest and most convenient option is the San Diego Transit shuttle, which cruises the three terminals at 10-minute intervals between 05:00 and 01:00. These buses will drop you at downtown businesses and hotels. If you rent a car, then simply take the Harbor drive exit, which leads directly downtown. Limousines and taxis are also available for hire, and charge regulated fares to destinations in the city.
