Salt Lake City Transport

Salt Lake City has a well organised and efficient public transport system that caters for residents and tourists alike and includes buses, taxis and a light rail service. Hiring a car is a good option if you are thinking of exploring further afield and driving around the city is relatively easy.

By bus

The Utah Transit Authority provides bus services throughout the city and surrounding areas. There is a free fare zone in the downtown area from 400 South to North Temple, continuing up Main Street to 500 North and between 200 East and West Temple. You can ride for free as many times as you like within this zone. Tickets can be purchased from vending machines or when boarding the bus. They are valid for two hours from the time of purchase and can be used as often as necessary on both buses and light rail. Most buses run from 06.00 until midnight on weekdays; Saturdays from 07.00 until midnight and Sundays have a limited service. During the ski season, a bus operates between Salt Lake City and the nearby ski areas.

Taxis

There are several taxi companies in Salt Lake City offering a 24-hour service, including City Cab and Yellow Cab Company. There are designated taxi ranks at the airport and various locations around the city. For any other locations, taxis must be telephoned and booked in advance. All taxis are metered and it is customary for passengers to tip up to 15 per cent of the total fare.

Light Rail

The Transit Express (TRAX) is a light rail service that began in 1999. Trax has two lines: one goes from the Delta Centre along South Temple to Main Street, from where it runs straight south to Sandy. The other line runs from Main Street to the University of Utah. Trains stop at the stations every 10 to 30 minutes. The fare-free bus zone in the city centre also applies to the light rail services.

Tourist services

Visitors can purchase an all day pass, which is valid for unlimited rides on buses and TRAX light rail system. The passes are available from vending machines or from sales outlets at supermarkets and other retailers. During the winter, a special ski bus operates to Little Sundance, Alta, Cottonwood Canyon and Brighton ski resorts.

From the airport

Transportation from the airport to the city is easy and quick. The short journey can be made by shuttle buses, public bus, taxi, or limousine. Car hire companies are also on hand and you can book online to ensure a vehicle.
