Salt Lake City Restaurants

Although there is a good selection of restaurants spread around the city, Salt Lake doesn't have a sophisticated dining area that you would find in most other comparable cities. The best place to head to for top quality food is the area surrounding West Temple Street. Many international cuisines are represented including European, Mexican, Latin and Asian. Some of the better microbreweries are as well known for their ethnic dishes as they are for their brews. There are some great seafood restaurants offering extensive menus and the local bistros are a good choice for those on a limited budget.

Local Cuisine

Fry sauce is a unique specialty found only in Utah. It's a mixture of ketchup, mayonnaise and other seasonings eaten with French fries. Most of the local and chain restaurants serve this tasty pink sauce, which was invented by the hamburger chain, Arctic Circle. Green gelatine topped with miniature marshmallows and mixed with grated carrots or cottage cheese and pineapple can be found at most Mormon social functions. Another dish you may see is funeral potatoes, made from potatoes, cheddar cheese, canned soup and sour cream, which is then baked and covered with buttered bread crumbs. The Mormon Church advises its followers not to drink alcohol so a sweet red punch has become the state's most popular beverage.
