Travel to Sacramento
Sacramento is not only the capital of California, but is also a distinctive historical and cultural centre. Sacramento has seen many changes during the course of its history, from Indian tribal land to the gold rush and on to modern times, yet it remains an attractive destination famous for its wonderful scenery and amazing flowers.
Transportation to Cordoba
Sacramento International Airport is located 12 miles north of the city and offers regular services to many domestic and international destinations. Most international connections, however, go through LA Airport or other main Californian airports. There are regular bus connections from the airport to downtown Sacramento. Amtrak trains connect the city to its vast network and Greyhound coaches provide an alternative means of transport. By car, Sacramento can be reached by I-80 from the east and west, I-5 from the northwest and I-99 from the north and south.
In Sacramento itself, a good public transport system provides easy access to downtown and several suburbs with buses, trolleys and a light rail network. Taxis are also easily available.
What to see
Sacramento is home to several historic buildings and sights connected to the 1940s gold rush. John Sutters Fort was built in 1839 and is an original symbol of the California Gold Rush era. With cannons and a prison, visitors can see characters dressed in period costumes. The Governors Mansion has been home to dignitaries including Nancy Reagan. Old Sacramento is a Western style replica town complete with horse-drawn carriages and river boat cruises.
Day trips
Lake Tahoe, about one hundred miles east of Sacramento via highway 50, is a vibrant ski town with more than a dozen world class resorts. San Francisco is a 90-minute drive southwest of Sacramento, down the I-80. Here you can just stroll along the historic streets and the famous wharf. Located in the beautiful Napa Valley, Dr Wilkinsons Hot Springs offer mineral whirlpools and mud baths in addition to massage and beauty treatments.
Activities and leisure
The confluence of the American and Sacramento rivers provides excellent conditions for river rafting. Several companies provide equipment and guides. Also by the two rivers, Discovery Park offers plenty of facilities for outdoor activities such as archery, boating and hiking. The Point amusement park is a fun day out for the young, with roller coaster rides and go-karting.
Safety issues
Visitors to major cities like Sacramento should be on their guard against petty crimes such as muggings, pick- pocketing and theft. Also, carjacking can be a real hazard for those driving long distances. Be aware of your surroundings and take out sufficient travel insurance before departing.
