Transportation to Richmond

What to see

Richmond is rich in history and famous historical sites in the city include the State Capitol building, designed by Thomas Jefferson. Good places to begin your explorations are Monument Avenue, featuring a wealth of historical monuments and Canal Walk, following the James River. Richmond National Battlefield Park, which contains monuments to the Civil War, is another main attraction. The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden was a former hospice for children, and is today open to visitors, offering nature trails and a Tea House. Many historical mansions bearing witness to Richmonds historical past are today open to visitors seeking a taste of old Victorian living.

Day trips

A quick drive to Charlottesville is not complete without a visit to its five historical gems: Monticello, the Grounds of the University of Virginia, Ash Lawn-Highland, Historic Court Square and Michie Tavern. Natural Bridge Caverns offer a guided tour through the cave taking visitors 347 feet into the earth and featuring hanging gardens, totem poles, flowstone cascades, stalactites and stalagmites among other treasures. Just a short drive from Richmond is Blue Ridge Parkway. Visitors can enjoy picnics, nature trails and camping on the attractive Parkway. Sometimes called Americas Favourite Drive, it offers both stunning scenery and close-up looks at the natural and cultural history of the southern Appalachian Mountains.

Activities and leisure

Richmond features the nations only white-water rafting traversing the city itself. Inexperienced and experienced paddlers can enjoy this unique outdoor activity. Exciting level four white-water rafting combines with tales of local tradition, historic sites and scenic beauty to make this outing a unique adventure. Several public golf courses are also available in and around Richmond.

Safety issues

Water sports and activities such as boating and surfing can place holidaymakers at risk of injuries. Be aware that both I-95 and I-81 are heavy-duty truck routes, and accidents are common, so be especially careful while driving on them.
