Travel to Pensacola

The nickname the City of Five Flags is often given to the city on account of the flags of Spain (Castile), France, Great Britain, the Confederate States of America and the United States having all flown over the city at some point in its history.

Located in the state of Florida, Pensacola is a medium-sized city that forms the county seat of Escambia County. The city has its own sea port located at Pensacola Bay and is also home to a large United States Navy airbase. In addition, fine beaches, museums and a variety of attractions make Pensacola an attractive holiday destination.

Transportation to Pensacola

Most international visitors will reach Pensacola by flying to a larger Florida city and taking a connecting flight to the Pensacola Regional Airport. Land transportation options are also available with the Greyhound Bus Company, which offer connections from many major US cities, and major interstates provide easy access from neighbouring cities and from out of state. Amtrak provides rail connections from major US destinations to Pensacola Station.

What to see

Theres a reasonable selection of places to visit here when on holiday, with highlights such as the historic Fort Pickens and the Pensacola lighthouse. If its too hot and youd prefer to be indoors, then head for the National Museum of Naval Aviation, Pensacola Museum of Art or the TT Wentworth Jr Florida State Museum.

Daytrips

If you have a rental or private vehicle, then you might want to consider crossing the border and visiting the Alabama Gulf Coast, where youll find sights and attractions such as Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines, Bellingrath Gardens and Home and Battleship Memorial Park. If you prefer a day travelling by sea, then ask at your hotel about the daily boat trips that depart from Pensacola Beach for various Florida coast destinations.

Activities and leisure

Down at the beach, visitors can get active on the sand with a game of Frisbee or beach volleyball, or head into the water for a variety of pursuits such as surfing, windsurfing, skiing, jet-skiing, snorkelling and scuba diving. Away from the beach, there are golf courses, while popular hotels have their own fitness centres for those feeling in need of a workout.

Safety issues

Visitors to Pensacola need not concern themselves overly with issues of safety, and generally speaking, most holidaymakers enjoy vacations that are free of any unfortunate incidents. Like any big city however, crime does exist, so its wise to be sensible with your cash and valuables and to avoid doing anything that might attract the attention.

Taking out travel insurance before you embark on your trip can give you some peace of mind that if you should lose or have money or property stolen, you will be reimbursed. Additionally, a travel insurance policy with medical cover will be helpful in the event that you become ill during your holiday.
