Travel to Orlando
Known throughout the world as one of the most exciting and high profile tourist destinations, Orlando in the state of Florida, is a city that is worthy of all of its accolades and positive reputation. The city was first put on the map in 1965 when Walt Disney decided to build his famous world there; the rest is history as they say as the legacy of that decision now sees a city with the greatest concentration of theme parks of any city on the planet. For the young and the young at heart, Orlando is a city literally teeming with exciting attractions and a tourist infrastructure guaranteed to make holidaying an effortless and entirely enjoyable experience.
Transportation to Orlando
Orlando International Airport provides the chief gateway into the city and for most international tourists, is the means by which they will arrive. Orland-Sanibel Airport also provides an air gateway, although it serves a significantly smaller number of visitors. For US or Canadian residents or those already vacationing in the country, Orlando can be reached fairly easily by road, being served by a number of major interstates. Trains and Greyhound buses provide satisfactory alternatives to flying and have reputations for offering efficient services.
What to see
Disneys Magic Kingdom, EPCOT Center and MGM Studios, Universal Studios, Sea World, Busch Gardens, the Kennedy Space Center, Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon and Wet n Wild; the list of attractions in the city of Orlando and the Orlando-Kissimmee, Florida, Metropolitan Statistical Area is endless, and visitors taking a regular 2-week vacation wont find themselves with a minute to waste if they want to see everything the city has to offer. Walt Disney World is a district and major attraction in its own right and is the citys greatest draw card, offering everything from theme parks to accommodation, night life, shopping and leisure pursuits.
Day trips
Those with rental vehicles can head out of the main drag of the city and discover some of the other delights on offer in the surrounding areas. Within reasonable driving distance and certainly coming high on the citys list of must-sees are attractions such as the exciting Busch Gardens theme park in Tampa and the equally thrilling Sea World. Drive a little further and you can relax on Daytona Beach for the day or go further still and check out the fascinating Kennedy Space Center.
Activities and leisure
The citys water parks, Wet n Wild, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach, offer visitors the chance to participate in a little outdoor activity while those staying at hotels in the Walt Disney World resort will find golf courses, tennis courts and other sporting facilities. There are municipal golf courses elsewhere as well as popular hotels offering fitness centres and swimming pools.
Safety issues
Visitors should keep in mind that Orlando has suffered from relatively high levels of crime over the last decade and should observe some basic caveats with regard to how they carry their cash and possessions, what areas of the city they frequent and how and where they park their rental vehicles. Risks to health are minimal with the subtropical heat perhaps offering the most significant threat.
