Travel to Omaha

Situated in the east of the Midwestern state of Nebraska on the border with Iowa, Omaha is the capital and most important urban centre of this remote state. Omaha has a rich history and was somewhat of a frontier town in the early days of the American Midwest.

Today, this prairie outpost still maintains its cobbled alleyways in the market area of downtown and it also boasts a thriving cattle industry, while numerous, varied attractions bring tourists in from all over.

Transportation to Omaha

Eppley Airfield provides the easiest access to Omaha, and although not accessible directly from overseas, it is served by many major US carriers from airports around the country. Downtown is only a few minutes away via Abbott Drive or you can make use of the public buses, private shuttles and taxis. The airport is also well served by car hire companies.

Those who have more time on their hands can also get here by train, with the popular California Zephyr service running en-route from Chicago and San Francisco. Although a fairly expensive option for the time involved, it is a great journey. In addition, Greyhound buses run here from numerous regional and national destinations either directly or via connections from other major centres.

Driving to Omaha is straightforward, with the major I-80 coming in from the east (Newark via Chicago) and west (San Francisco via Salt Lake City). The north-south I-29 also provides fast access from Sioux Falls and Kansas City respectively. Interstate 680 conveniently bypasses Omaha for those passing right through from the north. Car hire is an attractive option for those staying outside the city.

What to see

A lot of people come to Omaha to experience the citys rich history and the excellent offering of museums provides perfect insight into Omahas past. A stroll around the market area of downtown will also reveal much in the way of history, with many old buildings and lashings of bustling character of yesteryear.

Its not all history however; there is plenty to keep the children interested, such as the many attractions and activities of the brilliant Henry Doorly Zoo. Touted as one of Americas best, this rambling complex features many exotic beasts and a quality aquarium and atrium. Several beautiful parks also dot the city, where many activities are on offer and popular concerts take place in the summer.

Daytrips

Although Omaha is a relatively remote city, there is much to do for those interested in taking daytrips. Apart from the history, numerous tourists come to Omaha to visit a real Midwest ranch and many of these ranches offer visitors the chance to tour their facilities on horseback. In addition, Kansas City and Topeka are a relatively short drive to the south, while Des Moines is just a couple of hours to the east.

Activities and leisure

Horseback riding can be experienced in and out of the city, with popular tours around the Old Market in downtown as well as half-day and day tours offered to many of the ranches that surround the city. You can also go boating on the Missouri River or on the lake in the Heartland of America Park.

Those into trekking might like to try out the infamous Mormon Trail, or for more of an adventurous theme, try the paragliding operations that offer a perfect birds-eye view of the beautiful landscape to the south of the city.

Activities and leisure

As with any unfamiliar destination, make sure you are well prepared before visiting Omaha. Remain vigilant at all times, particularly in busy tourist hotspots such as at bus stations and museums, and refrain from walking the streets at night.

If you plan on driving or partaking in adventure sports or horseback riding, you are increasing your risk of having an accident. Make sure your travel insurance policy includes medical care.
