Things to do in Oakland

There is plenty to see and do in Oakland and it is easy to occupy a few days enjoying the sights. The Oakland Museum provides a wealth of information on the history of California, and the Paramount Theatre is an excellent example of art deco architecture in downtown Oakland. The Charles Lee Tilden Regional Park and Lake Merritt offer good outdoor activities, and the city has one of the oldest Chinatowns in North America.

Chinatown

Oaklands Chinatown is one of the oldest Chinatowns in North America, and is actually a pan-Asian neighbourhood, reflecting the citys diversity, and many different Asian languages can now be heard here. Oaklands Chinatown has more of a buzz to it than nearby San Francisco, where they heavily cater for tourists.

In Oakland you have a great range of Asian supermarkets and shops, and one particular favourite for sweets and cakes is the Napoleon Super Bakery, easily spotted by the queues that often sprawl out of the door. Jade Villa is a favourite place for dim sum and is always busy. Chinatown is in downtown Oakland, and the heart is at 8th and Webster St. Its especially fun visiting here during festivals such as Chinese New Year.

Charles Lee Tilden Regional Park

The vast 2,000-acre site of the Charles Lee Tilden Regional Park is one of Oaklands most popular attractions and has plenty of activities for both adults and children alike. The park includes an 18-hole golf course, a botanical garden, environmental education centre, lakes, 31 miles of trails, and numerous picnic areas, some of which can be reserved in advance. Most popular with children are the pony rides and miniature steam trains, as well as Little Farm where they can feed the animals. There is also swimming and fishing possible within the park, at Lake Anza, and there are changing facilities on the site.

Lake Merritt

The 155-acre Lake Merritt has been described as The Jewel of Oakland. Lake Merritt is the oldest wildlife sanctuary in North America, and the brackish waters are part freshwater and tidal salt water that runs into the lake twice a day from the bay. The lake has some good wildlife and its possible to see herons and egrets roosting. The path around the lake is popular with walkers and runners, and there are always boats on the lake, either competitive teams training, or day-trippers enjoying a gondola ride. There is plenty for children to do, with playground rides, and feeding the ducks being especially popular.

Paramount Theater

Visitors to Oakland are often surprised to see the number of examples of art-deco architecture in the downtown area. While many of these buildings are in a poor state of repair, the Paramount Theater is considered one of the finest pieces of art deco design in the entire United States. The building was completed in 1931 and still operates as a venue for a range of concerts and other performances. On the first and third Saturday of each month there are tours starting at 10am, the tour lasts two hours and gives a detailed history and view of the theatre.

Indian Rock

Indian Rock is a volcanic outcrop in the middle of a north Berkley residential area, and there are some popular neighbourhood walks in this area. Aside from Indian Rock, Mortar and Grotto Rock are also popular parks, and there are some steps carved into the rocks for you to climb up. There are some terrific views, and this is a great place for a picnic. Many people buy some take out food on Solano Avenue and then head for Indian Rock; its a particularly popular place at sunset. These small rocks have also become something of a training ground for beginner rock climbers.
