Be Safe in Oakland

Oakland is certainly not a crime free paradise, but most tourists do enjoy a stress free trip here. There are a few important safety guidelines that visitors should note, and some areas that should be avoided at night. You should not walk around the city alone after dark.

Safety

While its true to say most visitors to Oakland enjoy trouble free trips, crime is relatively high here, with the city having something of a bad reputation, and tourists should take care. Oakland ranks quite high, nationwide, in terms of crime figures, although much of the serious crime is gang-related and rarely involves innocent passers-by. In recent years there have been substantial efforts to fight crime in the city, and the evidence suggests gains are being made. Most of the crime here takes place in the west and east areas of the city.

Tourists are more likely to be the victim of a petty crime, such as pick pocketing, or bag snatching than anything more serious, so always keep your belongings close to hand when you are in a busy area. There is some car crime in the city, so if you rent a car do not leave any valuables inside, and always lock it.

As with many places, there are some areas that should be avoided at night, such as the citys parks, and east Oakland (International Blvd), and you should not walk alone at night. If you are unsure your hotel will be able to advise and help to arrange for taxis after dark.

Health

There are no specific health risks in Oakland, the water is safe to drink and the city has good medical services and hospitals. An insurance policy including good medical cover is essential for travel to the US, as treatment here can be refused without advance payment or evidence of insurance. A number of medications that are usually available over the counter in other countries may require a prescription in the USA.
