New York Weather

The most pleasant times to visit New York are generally from mid-September to October and from May to early June. The New York climate is quite temperate, but as a large city, extremes in temperature do occur.

Summer

Summer in June, July, August and even early September can bring very hot and humid conditions, with average daily temperatures often topping 90F. In August and September, New York is often visited by tropical storms and sporadically a hurricane. It is a good idea to bring a light sweater to avoid freezing in the many air conditioned buildings, such as museums.

Winter

Winter from December through early March brings temperatures near or below freezing and the possibility of real snow storms, icy rain and harsh cold winds, particularly in January. Temperatures below 0F only happen about once per decade on average, but temperatures in the 10s and 20s are quite frequent at the height of winter. However, the weather is changeable and some years see no snow at all.
