The New York sports scene is home to numerous major professional teams, including American football, baseball and basketball, all of which are popular with New Yorkers and matches are played regularly. Ice skating is popular in winter at the many rinks around the city.

Baseball

New York boasts two major league baseball teams, the New York Yankees and the New York Mets. Both teams enjoy a tremendous amount of support by locals and have won many important games. The New York Yankees play regular matches at their home stadium, Yankee Stadium, in the Bronx district. The New York Mets play many of their matches at the Shea Stadium in the Queens neighbourhood.

American Football

The American Football season runs from September to the end of December, when the play-offs take place to decide which teams get to play in the prestigious Super Bowl. New Yorks main teams are the New York Jets and the New York Giants. Both teams play regular matches throughout the season at the Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands Sports Complex in New Jersey.

Ice and Roller Skating

Roller-skating, roller-blading and ice-skating are all popular, with most New Yorkers knowing how to roller-skate and there are excellent facilities in many of the citys parks and neighbourhoods. The Rockefeller Center is home to one of the most famous ice-skating rinks in the world and even though queues can be long, skating with the masses here is a memorable experience. New York City Marathon

This marathon is one of the major sporting events world wide and attracts around 35,000 participants every year, in addition to many thousands of spectators. Taking place on the first Sunday in November, the marathon course runs from Staten Island past many of the citys main attractions and sights, to finally end up at Central Parks Tavern on the Green.
