Be Safe in New York

New York can be intimidating for the first time visitor, and finding your way around at times presents problems. Visitors are highly advised to stick to familiar and busy areas and not venture into isolated, deserted places, especially after dark.

Safety

Youll hardly ever be harassed, but its always a good idea to walk with an air of purpose and self-confidence. Dont suddenly stop in the middle of the pavement to consult your map. No matter where in the city, should you find yourself on a deserted street that feels unsafe, be sure to leave as quickly as you can. Special mention should be given to Central Park. You may have heard of the frequent muggings here, or more likely seen scenes to that effect in Hollywood movies.
Make yourself a less attractive target for thieves by staying in lit areas and leaving iPods, Walkmans and other portable electronics in your room. Park streets and paths may be leafy and green, but they are no different than alleys and sidewalks. If theyre dark, stay away.

Health

There are no particular health risks associated with travel to New York. Food and drink are generally safe to enjoy. Be aware that health care in the U.S. can be prohibitively expensive. Hospitals and doctors are excellent, but will insist on proof of sufficient funds before commencing treatment. This does not apply to emergencies, but you will be charged an arm and a leg once youve recuperated. Extensive medical and travel insurance is essential.
