Minneapolis Leisure

Minneapolis has its fair share of professional sports teams and it's worth finding out about any local games taking place during your visit. The lakes, forests and prairies in the region are ideal for leisure activities and the varied landscapes are highlighted by the four distinct seasons.

Spectator sports

The Hubert Humphrey Metrodome is home territory for the 1987 and 1991 World Champion Minnesota Twins, as well as the Minnesota Vikings. The Target Centre, also in downtown Minneapolis, is home court for the Minnesota Timberwolves, while professional hockey can be found at the new Xcel Energy Centre in St Paul. If you are visiting during the winter months then pop along to the St Paul Curling Club on Selby Avenue in St Paul. It is the largest club in the country with a rich history and has hosted national and regional championships.

Activities

When people think of Minneapolis, they usually think of lakes; there are 22 within the city limits providing ample leisure pursuits and watersports. Some of the best urban fishing anywhere in the United States can be found here, with muskie, bass and walleye in abundance. There are several companies which organise fishing trips as well as lake cruises. If you're feeling more energetic, then have a go at windsurfing during the warmer summer months. During the afternoon, the breezes pick-up and are ideal for sailing and windsurfing. Minnesota boasts more golfers per capita than any other state. There are 5 courses within the Minneapolis city limits alone, and more than 170 in the metro area.
