Be Safe in Minneapolis

Like most other American cities, Minneapolis tends to suffer from a high crime rate. Most of it occurs in specific neighbourhoods in the city, so you should be able to avoid problems if you plan your visit carefully.

Safety

Minneapolis had a bad reputation during the 1990s for high crime due to gangland violence. Although most of the problems were eradicated and the murder rate dropped, the last couple of years have seen both petty and serious crime rates rising once again. Areas best avoided include the North Side of Minneapolis and anywhere near Broadway Ave and west of Interstate 94. The southern part of the city also has some rougher areas, although this is changing as property prices have been increasing dramatically. The Phillips neighbourhood was the centre of the gangland troubles in the 1990s and it is still considered to be one of the least safe parts of Minneapolis, especially around Bloomington Avenue. The most common problem for visitors is bag snatchers and pickpockets, usually found at the tourist sites and on public transport. Don't carry large amounts cash or your passport with you or leave them in your hotel room. Use the security facilities that may be available at your accommodation.

Health

There are no special vaccinations required for a trip to America and very few other health concerns. Food hygiene standards in restaurants are high and closely monitored. Modern medical facilities are available should you fall ill or have an accident, and the treatment everywhere is excellent. Medical costs throughout the country are exceptionally high. Make sure you have appropriate travel insurance that will cover all medical costs, and be sure to keep all your receipts for later claims.
