Getting to Minneapolis

Reaching and leaving Minneapolis is straight-forward and there are a number of transport options available. The international airport is 10 miles from the city centre and is served by many airlines. Long-distance buses connect with other cities within the state and throughout America. Amtrak has a station in St Paul, although the service is more limited than the buses. Minneapolis can easily be reached by car on one of the many interstate roads.

By air

Minneapolis/St Paul International Airport is conveniently located ten miles south of either downtown. There are buses, taxis and a light rail link for the short transfer to the city centre. The airport handles all domestic and international flights with daily services to some 25 international destinations, as well as 175 US cities.

By car

The Interstate Highways I-35 and I-94 are the main routes into the city. The I-35, which divides into I-35W bisecting Minneapolis and I-35E through St Paul runs north and south, and I-94 runs east and west through both cities. The interstate roads will connect you to the 494/694 beltway around the metro area.

By train

Amtrak is the national railway service provider and has comfortable and generally reliable services. The local station is located on Transfer Road in St Pauls Midway area, about 10 minutes from either downtown area. There are daily services to Chicago, Milwaukee and Seattle.

By bus

Long-distance buses are provided by the Greyhound Bus Company and Jefferson Bus Lines. Both companies use the same terminals in the city centres. The Minneapolis station is on North Ninth Street, just opposite the Orpheum Theatre while the St Paul station can be found on West University Avenue, near the State Capitol building. Greyhound is the largest operator in America and it has an extensive network covering hundreds of destinations. All Greyhound buses are well-equipped and reservations are usually not necessary. You should arrive at the terminal at least an hour before departure to purchase your ticket.

Mitchell International Airport

Minneapolis/St Paul International Airport ranks in the top 10 busiest airports in the United States. The two terminals are served by most major domestic airlines and several foreign carriers. There is a free shuttle bus connecting the terminals operating around the clock, seven days a week. Facilities in the terminal include ATMs, a bureau de change, postal centre and wireless internet. There are numerous restaurants and shops in both terminals. Facilities for disabled travellers include lifts, toilets, electric carts and TDD phones.

Minneapolis Airport transportation

Shuttle buses are operated by a number of companies and hotels, and these can be booked at ticket counters in the ground transportation atrium in the Lindbergh Terminal. Public buses operated by Metro Transit provide transportation throughout the Minneapolis/St Paul area. The bus stop is at the airports transit centre on the east side of the Blue and Red car parks. A Light rail service has stations at both terminals and stops at 15 destinations in the area, including downtown Minneapolis. Taxis can be found outside each terminal and are the most expensive mode of transport to the city.
