Minneapolis Transport
The public transport system in Minneapolis is efficient and inexpensive. The bus system serves most of the city and the suburbs, and taxis are plentiful. Hiring a car is a good option if you are thinking of exploring further afield, and driving around the city is relatively easy as the road network is based on a grid. Traffic can be heavy at times, especially during the rush hour.
By bus
Metro Transit (MTC) operates the public bus system in Minneapolis. They provide over 100 routes throughout the Twin Cities area, some of them operating 24 hours-a-day. A local map and timetable can be picked up from transit outlet stores located at 719 Marquette in Downtown Minneapolis and the Downtown St Paul Skyway. Single fares are available for purchase on the bus but make sure you have the correct money as drivers do not carry any change. If you need to travel on more than one bus to reach your destination, ask the driver for a transfer when you pay your fare. Your transfer is good for unlimited rides in any direction for up to 2 1/2 hours. There is a set fare within the downtown districts and stored value cards are valid at any time of the day.
Taxis
There are designated taxi ranks at the airport, the Mall of America and in Downtown Minneapolis and St Paul. For any other locations, taxis must be telephoned and booked in advance. All taxis are metered and there are surcharges for extra passengers or airport runs. It is customary for passengers to tip up to 15% of the total fare.
Light Rail
The Hiawatha Line, or LRT, serves downtown Minneapolis, the Hubert Humphrey Metrodome, Minneapolis/St. Paul International, the Mall of America, and all points in between. It's a good choice for visitors and covers some of the most popular attractions. Fares for the bus and train system are the same.
Tourist services
The Padelford Packet Company runs paddlewheel tours up the Mississippi River from May to October. Climb aboard one of the five riverboats and see old Fort Snelling, historic Pig's Eye Landing and a wide range of wildlife. Daily Public Excursions feature historically narrated 90-minute sightseeing cruises. The boats depart from Harriet Island in St Paul and Boom Island in Minneapolis.
From the airport
Transportation from the airport to the city is easy and quick. The ten mile journey can be made by shuttle and public bus, taxi, or a light rail system. Car hire companies are also on hand and you can book online to ensure a vehicle.
