Travel to Milwaukee

Milwaukee is situated on the shores of Lake Michigan and is the largest city in Wisconsin. It has some well-kept 19th century buildings that sit alongside steel-and-glass skyscrapers. The city is well-known for its summer festivals and huge breweries. There is plenty for visitors to see and do, with many cultural attractions, museums, art collections and leisure activities.

Transportation to Milwaukee

Most visitors arrive by plane at Mitchell International Airport. It is located just eight miles from the city centre, so the transfer by bus or taxi is quick and easy. America has a good long-distance bus network, and Milwaukee can be reached from hundreds of destinations throughout America. Amtrak also has rail services that stop at a station downtown and at a new station at the airport.

What to see

Milwaukee is rich in historical and cultural attractions. It has some interesting architecture including old Victorian warehouses as well as more modern waterfront developments. The city is dominated by breweries, giving rise to a huge number of bars and pubs that are scattered around its neighbourhoods.

It's easy to understand why this is such a fun-loving city, with so many summer festivals and a good choice of entertainment options. There are many pleasant parks and green spaces including Mitchell Park and the impressive Horticultural Conservatory.

Milwaukee has some fine museums such as the Art Museum, with its collection of nearly 20,000 works including some by big-name artists such as Picasso, Monet, Rodin, Degas and Warhol. The Public Museum is considered to be one of the best natural history museums in the United States, and it has six million items and some excellent exhibitions.

Daytrips

There are many other attractions in the surrounding areas, and the extensive road network makes it easy to get around. Madison, the capital of Wisconsin, is regularly voted as one of the best places to live in the United States. It is located on a narrow piece of land running between two larger sections and has a relatively small population of 200,000. Home to a vibrant downtown and numerous quirky attractions, the only problem you will have here is trying to fit everything in.

Eagle River is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. It is known as the snowmobile capital of the world, and has a 500-mile long chain of perfectly groomed snowmobile trails. The Three Lakes Winery is also in the area and has a selection of premium fruit and berry wines. Self-guided tours are available as well as free tastings year-round.

Leisure

Lake Michigan provides plenty of leisure opportunities including various water sports and cruises. There are several companies that organise fishing trips, with the salmon fishing being particularly good. The Pettit National Ice Cenre has two ice rinks and a speed skating oval. There are lessons available for all standards as well as skate hire. Wisconsin has some good rock climbing venues, although you will need a car to explore some of them.

Safety issues

Although the level of crime is generally higher that in most European cities, you should be able to avoid any serious problems as long as you are sensible and take adequate precautions. The city is safe to walk around during the day; however, you should take care at night-time and ensure that you dont walk alone. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you and your family when visiting Milwaukee.
