Milwaukee Transport
Getting around Milwaukee is easy and inexpensive using the public transport system. Note that there isn't a metropolitan train service, so buses and taxis are the normal choices. If you are staying in the downtown area, then most of the attractions are near the Milwaukee River and can be reached on foot.
By bus
Milwaukee's bus system is run by MCTS, providing over 50 routes around the city. Operating times vary depending on the route and the day of the week, so it's best to pick up a map and timetable from the MCTS Downtown Transit Centre. Make sure you have the correct money for your journey as drivers do not carry any change.
The routes are designed to create a network, so that by transferring from one to another, you can reach your destination. If you are going to transfer, ask the operator on the first bus you ride for a transfer ticket. This allows you to board as many buses as you wish within a 1 hour period. Most of Milwaukee's new bus fleet carry TV monitors that have a constant display of the upcoming stops along the route, with verbal and visual announcements shortly before every stop.
Taxis
Taxis can be flagged down on the street, but it can be difficult to find one, so it is best to phone and order one if you have to get somewhere at a specific time or are travelling at night. They are usually easy to find at larger hotels and at bus and train stations. All taxis are electronically metered and they have an initial fare, and then an additional charge for each mile or for time spent waiting.
Tourist services
The Milwaukee Trolley Loop is a free bus service sponsored by local businesses. It covers all of the main areas including East Town, Westown, Water Street, Brady Street, Old World Third Street, Historic Third Ward and the Milwaukee Art Museum. The service is available from May to September, and buses serve stops every 30 minutes.
From the airport
Passengers arriving at the airport requiring ground transportation can choose between buses and taxis. There is a regular public bus that serves many destinations in the city and several shuttle buses, which tend to be a little quicker. Taxis can be found outside the main terminal building. Car hire companies are also on hand, and you can pre-book online to ensure a vehicle.
