Milwaukee Restaurants

Milwaukee has a good choice of places to eat, with varied cuisine and budgets to suit everyone. Apart from the normal burger and steakhouse restaurants, the city is well-known for its ethnic offerings. The Germans were the first settlers and at one stage, they made up over half of the entire population. They had a big impact on the food served in restaurants, as did other immigrants who arrived at a later stage such as the Italians and the Polish. Milwaukee's location on the shores of Lake Michigan means that freshwater fish is plentiful and can be found in numerous restaurants.

Where to eat

The two best areas for restaurants in Milwaukee are Brady Street on the Northeast side and Old World Third Street, just west of the Milwaukee River. Brady Street has top-quality restaurants, cafés and bakeries at affordable prices. It is also a popular shopping area and has some of the city's best bars. Old World Third Street is known for its upscale restaurants and has a more diverse selection of cuisines including many ethnic varieties. Prices tend to be more expensive here than at other locations.

If you are in the area at lunchtime, then consider visiting the Milwaukee Public Market on Water Street. The market sells a range of gourmet, specialty and organic foods, with vendors selling everything from fresh seafood to locally grown organic produce. There are many freshly prepared items throughout the market including hot soups, sandwiches, salads, dips, chips, sushi, fried fish and falafel.
