Getting to Maui
Tourists arrive in Maui by air, which is the only way to get to Maui. Kahului Airport is the main airport and is situated on the island. It is marked as the second largest airport in the state and provides many inter-island flights from other major airports in the same state. Several US airlines also provide connections to the west coast on the mainland.
By air
Kahului Airport is situated on the northern edge of the land bridge between Haleakala and the West Maui Mountain Range, on the island of Maui, about five kilometres east of the town of Kahului. The airport serves as a secondary hub for major airlines like Hawaiian and Aloha.
There are many facilities for passengers including several restaurants and bars, club lounges, courtesy telephones, shops, mail boxes and special facilities for those with disabilities.
By rail
Since Maui is an island, there are no trains coming in from other destinations. However, the very impressive Sugar Cane Train ride, provided by Lahaina Kanaapali Railroad, is an excellent way to observe the island. The train travels between the resort areas in Kanaapali to Lahaina Town. You can see many scenic views along the way. Visit: www.sugarcanetrain.com for more information.
By car
Since Maui doesn’t offer much of a public transportation system, hiring a car is the best way to get around at your own convenience. Maui boasts many highways which connect every part of the island together. These highways are in a good condition, making it very easy for tourists to explore the island.
Honoapiilani Highway (Route 30) runs between West Maui and Wailuku, around magnificent cliffs and along white sandy beaches, while Hana Highway (Routes 36) goes to Maui's north coast, from Kahului to the village of Hana on the eastern shore. If you wish to go up to the summit of Haleakala, take Haleakala Highway, which leads to Pukalani and Makawao in upcountry Maui.
Taxis
If you want to use taxi services in Maui, you have to call in advance and book your taxi. Tourists should also take note that some companies only provide taxis in certain areas. The best thing to do is to check the availability of taxis in your location when you first arrive.
Some of the taxi companies include AB Taxi: +1 808 667 7575 (Lahaina), Alii Cab Kihei: +1 808 661 3688 (Kihei), Central Maui Taxi: +1 808 244 7278 (Wailuku), Excellent Taxi Services: +1 808 878 3407 (Kula) and West Maui Taxi: +1 808 667 2605 (West Maui).
