Wisconsin has an important place in weather history. The states climate has ranged from polar to tropical for hundreds of millions of years, and even at the present time, there it is a significant difference between the weather in July and January.

Northeastern Wisconsin has a very different climate from southwestern Wisconsin. The result is that Wisconsins flora are divided into two separate areas, or floristic provinces, with a narrow zone of demarcation known as the tension zone lying between them.

Cold and snowy winters

Wisconsin is well-known for its cold, snowy winters. The state is a haven for winter sports enthusiasts. The lowest ever recorded temperature occurred in Couderay in February, 1996 and it was -48.33 C. The wet season falls in the spring and summer, and the highest temperature that was ever recorded in the state was in July, 1936 at 45.56 C.
